Chapter One

After a cursory walk around the old, dilapidated house and seeing no sign of any inhabitants, private investigator Bobbi Dale knelt by the back entrance and went to work picking the lock. Luckily for her, this house wasn’t equipped with a deadbolt and the old doorknob proved to be no match for her. She gently turned the knob and cracked open the door.

The door opened to an extremely outdated kitchen. Bobbi grimaced at the filthy vinyl floor and beaten-up cabinets. If she had to guess, the place hadn’t been remodeled since the mid-1970s. She wasn’t getting paid to assess the decor, however.

The police were hearing rumors about a potential terrorist threat to the city, and frequent collaborator, Detective Susan McDonnell, recommended Bobbi and her team to the sergeant. Once she negotiated her fee, Bobbi reached out to several of her usual contacts in the anti-government world, and discovered a fair amount of unregistered explosives were purchased by a small group of men. After she acquired physical descriptions of the suspects and the vehicles they drove, she traced their movements to this section of town, and this address in particular. The house had been abandoned years ago, so there was no current owner listed.

Earlier, when she was casing the property, Bobbi noticed a gasoline-powered generator in the backyard that appeared to have been used recently. There was no doubt at least one person was squatting here. All she had to do was confirm if these were indeed the suspected terrorists and report back to the police when she had some concrete information.

The blonde investigator glanced around the kitchen. A nearby wastebasket contained some fast food bags featuring the current logos of their respective chains, meaning someone had purchased the meals within the last few months. She poked at the wastebasket’s contents for anything else of interest, but all she found was garbage.
